The name Mercedes, which was later to acquire world fame, was initially used only for the driver and team, not for the product or brand. Jellinek's 12 hp Phoenix racing car was driven by works driver Wilhelm Bauer in the Week of Nice racing event in March 1899 and emerged as the winner in the Nice–Magagnon–Nice race. |
